 Equipment Needed To Play Cornhole

Cornhole Drinking Game - Equipment

Y’all have heard of Cornhole, right? Batato? Bago? Bean Bag Toss? No worries, you’ll get to know everything about it in a glimpse of an eye. First things first, the equipment you’ll need when playing Cornhole:

  • 2 goal boards, one per team. Although these can easily be made at home, to save you time & materials, consider buying them. A good deal is available on Amazon for $69.99 (with the bags included).
  •  8 bean bags in total, 4 per team. We recommend you choose 2 different colors of the bean bags so that teams are identified clearly.
  • Drinks for everyone. The choice is up to you, but beers always work best. Also, if there’s anyone under the drinking age, you could easily use non-alcoholic beverages too!

Oh, and we almost forgot. Cornhole can be played by 2 to 4 people (1 vs 1, or 2 vs 2). Sadly, it’s a drinking game for small groups only 🙁 Well, if you wish to play with more people, you might get more goal boards, but, keep in mind that there should be only up to 2 players per board.

Setting The Game Up

Once you have the equipment there, setting the game up should be simple. What you’ll have to do first, is place the boards 20 to 27 feet apart, depending on your choice. Bear in mind that the holes should be away from the board.

Then, divide all players into 2 teams (of 1 or 2 players), and players from one team should stay near opposite goal boards, in front of each other, on the side of the board. Make sure to have a table near for your drinks, so you don’t make a huge mess.

The Rules Of Cornhole

Now, all 8 bags will be placed on one of the boards first. Players staying near that board start the round. Considering that they are players from different teams, they take turns tossing the bean bags to the opposite goalboard, until there are no bags left.

Once their round is over, the points are calculated, and players of the other board continue playing. It’s important to know that you can only toss the bean bags from the side of the board, and absolutely not from the back, or change sides while playing. Also, you shouldn’t pass through the front edge of the board, or you get a foul.

Now, let’s head to scoring, shall we?

Scoring When Playing Cornhole

First and foremost, only bean bags that make it through the hole, and bean bags on the face of the board are worth points. Whenever one touches the ground, or bounces from the ground to the board, it gets canceled.

Now, here’s how the scoring goes:

  • Each bean bag that makes it through the hole in the board is worth 3 points;
  • Each bean bag that remains on the goal board is worth 1 point.
  • Whichever team has the most points at the end of the round, cancels the other team’s points, while they must subtract their total, from the losing team’s total, and that is their final score. So let’s say your team has scored 5 points this round, and the other team has scored 2. Your total score for that round would be 3 points. Understandable, ain’t it?

Each team aims to be the first to reach 21 points and win the game that way.

Here are the drinking rules to turn it into the most amazing drinking game to play at home:

  • You must take 2 sips of your drink every time the other team scores.
  • If your toss makes no contact at all with the board, you must drink.
  • Your bag can get knocked out by the other player’s toss. If that happens, take a drink.
  • If your team goes over the winning score (21), take as many sips as the number of points you went over.
  • Finally, if your team loses the game, you must finish your drink(s).

Variations Of Cornhole Drinking Game

We totally agree. Playing the standard version of Cornhole is just enough. However, for all of you who want to increase the fun to infinity, here are a few other ways and rules to play:

Custom Cornhole

It’s not the ‘hit the board get one point’ rule anymore. It actually depends on what zone you hit. These boards include the safe zone, you drink & partner drinks, everybody drinks, waterfall, and take a shot! It makes the game even more fun, and the boards can be customized to your preferences. Just like the DIY Drinking Board Game

‘Chug Chug Chug’ Foul

When a team reaches a certain number of fouls (3 is a good one), the other team can make them chug their drinks for as long as they want.

‘Opposite Hand’ rule

To turn it into a more challenging drinking game, you can make players toss the bean bags with their non-dominant hand, and see how that goes.

Designated bags

Write a few dares or drinking challenges in the bags. Once one of these bags makes it through the hole, besides you getting your points, the other team has to drink or complete the specific challenge.

Final Thoughts

Cornhole, especially the drinking version, is on our favorites list forever now! Well, we enjoy it at family reunions too! Read our instructions carefully, add whatever extra rule you think you’d enjoy, and customize the gameplay depending on your preferences. Have the fun of your life!
